At the University of Georgia’s Center for Food Safety (CFS), staff members keep the wheels turning every day. One of those key behind-the-scenes players is administrative associate Melissa Slaughter — better known around campus as the “Dancing Queen.”
Dedicated to CFS
Slaughter joined the CFS business office in 2019 after working with UGA Extension in Spalding County. Her hard work and commitment quickly stood out, earning her the CFS Employee of the Year award in 2021.
While she describes herself as shy, Slaughter shines when it comes to sharing her love of dance. She teaches a free Dance Fitness class every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. on campus.
“God gave me the gift of dance,” she said. “I love to share it with others.”
She also organizes the popular “Thriller” dance routine for the annual CFS Halloween party — a highlight that brings joy to students, faculty and staff.
Embracing adventure
Slaughter isn’t afraid to seize new opportunities. She trained as an underwater rescue diver for the local fire department’s dive team.
Her favorite adventure, though, is closer to home.
“Jekyll Island is my happy place,” she said. “It’s the cleanest place I’ve ever been — no litter and spotless public beachside restrooms.”
Giving back to Griffin
Community service is another passion that drives Slaughter. Guided by the Golden Rule, she volunteers with projects ranging from Habitat for Humanity builds to local stream cleanups.
“I love volunteering in the community,” she said.
This fall, she’ll take part in Griffin Gives Back: District 1 Neighborhood and Annual Stream Clean-Up on Oct. 25.
Her greatest pride
Slaughter has accomplished much at UGA, including earning another degree through the university’s TAP program. But she says her proudest achievement is her son, William, a senior at Spalding High School who is dual-enrolled at Gordon College.
Watching him succeed, she said, brings her the greatest joy.
