Center for Food Safety research professional David Mann received the Classified Employee of the Year Award at the 37th Annual Classified Employee Awards Ceremony on the University of Georgia Griffin campus.

The Significance of the Award

The award is given to a faculty or staff member who has made outstanding contributions to the organization, campus or program.

“It is truly rewarding to know that my peers recognize and appreciate my contributions to the success of the campus,” Mann said. “Having made my career at the Griffin Campus, this award is especially meaningful.” This is Mann’s third time being voted as the CFS Employee of the Year.

Dedication to the Griffin Campus and Community

Mann has been employed at UGA Griffin for more than 20 years, during which time he has dedicated countless hours to serving others on and off campus.

When equipment malfunctions, he is the first to volunteer to troubleshoot and fix it, helping keep the center’s equipment and labs running smoothly.

He volunteers his time every year for the Annual Dawg Dash 5K held on the Griffin campus every March. This is one of the major events that connect the Griffin campus and community.

Mann also spends time off campus volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to renovate and build homes for those in need.

Influences on the Professional

During Mann’s UGA career, several faculty, staff and students have influenced his journey, including Distinguished Research Professor Larry Beuchat.

“Dr. Beuchat brought me into his lab and demonstrated how to design and organize experiments,” Mann said, adding that Beuchat helped him improve his skills in managing students and staff, writing effectively and communicating scientific findings clearly.

Mann contributed some of his growth and success to former lab coordinator, Lynne Thurber. “She taught me many fundamental laboratory techniques early on,” Mann remarked.

Creating a Campus Legacy

Mann’s two decades of service represent more than just technical expertise — they represent the fundamental spirit of the Griffin campus.

“I hope that my willingness to collaborate and support others played a role in being selected for this award,” he said.
